Media Control announced that the Bee Gees and Robin Gibb have spent a total of 1038 weeks on the German charts (singles & albums), this includes 129 weeks for Robin Gibb as a solo act. www.media-control.de However, this number seems too low because I doubt that they converted the monthly and bi-weekly charts from the 1960s and early 1970s into weekly charts. A friend from France did this a few years ago for the German Album Chart and he had calculated a total of 599 weeks for the Bee Gees (until 1998). According to musicline.de, they spent a total of 555 weeks on the Singles Chart (from 1967 until 2007). So if we add these numbers plus the weeks on the album charts from 1998 until 2009 their correct total should be about 1200 weeks (plus the 129 weeks for Robin Gibb).

The Bee Gees are on course to return to the UK artist albums chart's Top 10 this weekend as part of a wave of tribute buying for Robin Gibb. The Gibb brothers' Reprise/Rhino retrospective Number Ones is currently ranked as the week's fifth biggest seller, according to the Official Charts Company, having been placed in 34th position on last Sunday's chart. The Ultimate, another Reprise/Rhino best of, is showing up as an entry at 28 in the latest Sales Flashes, while a handful of Bee Gees hits have entered the lower reaches of the midweek singles Top 200, led in 98th place by their 1987 chart-topper You Win Again. Also registering in the chart at this stage of the week are Stayin' Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Massachusetts and Night Fever.

It is the highest position for Number Ones, which reached number seven in 2004 as a Polydor (Universal) release, but transferred to Reprise (Warner Music) in 2009. The Ultimate debuted and peaked at number 19 in 2009.

The Bee Gees scored UK #1s in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Their 1970s success was founded on the soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever". Robert Stigwood asked them to write 4 songs for his forthcoming movie in 2 weeks. He didn't give them a script, but told them it would be starring John Travolta, and be about the disco scene. They came up with six songs, and also the film's title - Stigwood was planning to call it "Saturday Night". The soundtrack went on to become the world's biggest selling LP, at 30 million, until "Thriller" came along 6 years later. In the USA, some of their feats are astonishing. They wrote 5 out of the 6 #1s between December 1977 and May 1978 - "How Deep Is Your Love" [3 weeks], "Stayin' Alive" [4 weeks], little brother Andy Gibb's "Love Is Thicker Than Water" [2 weeks], "Night Fever" [8 weeks], and Yvonne Elliman's "If I Can't Have You" [1 week] - plus Samantha Sang's "Emotion" which got to #3 during the same period. The Bee Gees sit at around 18 million singles, although it is a tragedy that their only million seller is by Steps.

The Bee Gees were caught up in the backlash against Disco. As one of the main faces of the movement, thanks to the association with "Saturday Night Fever", they experienced phenomenal international success in the late 70s but suffered the consequences in the 1980's with only one top 10 hit during that decade (albeit a No 1) but the nineties were kinder. Of course the halcyon days of "Saturday Night Fever" was long gone by the time the decade dawned, but throughout the decade they still made music and popular music at that, "Secret Love", "For Whom The Bell Tolls" "Immortality" and "Alone" were all top 10 hits for them in the 90s.

They also became the group of choice to cover if you were a boyband in the late 90s! Both Take That and Boyzone scored chart toppers with covers of their hits and even 911 took a version "More Than A Woman" to No 2 in 1998 before Steps outdid them all with the million selling cover of "Tragedy". All of this kept the band in the limelight and consequently the 1990 Greatest hits compilation continued to sell well throughout the decade, and after the death of Maurice Gibb in 2003 the remaining brothers decided to retire the group....

For instance 'Lamplight' was a top 5 radio hit and the same was only the B side of 'First Of May'. 'He Is A Liar' did poorly in sales but pretty good on German radio. From 1959 to 1970, the German equivalent of Billboard: Der Musikmarkt, published a number of pop charts which were consulted by various members of the music trade. This is only the fourth entry on this chart for the Bee Gees. "You Should Be Dancing" was a No. 1 hit in 1976. "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever" and "More Than a Woman" from the soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" shared the No. 3 spot in 1978 and "Tragedy" stopped at No. 22 in 1979.

"If I Can't Have You" (The Disco Boys Remixes), of "Bee Gees Greatest" Enters at number 71 in the German chart. For the first time since 2001.
The Bee Gees career stretches over more than 40 years in the German singles chart.

The remaining brothers announced that there would be no more new material by the group after Maurice's death in January 2003. So to see a new Bee Gees track enter the survey requires some detailed look. At first it is obvious that Rhino is a dedicated re-issues label. And as I'm not aware of a new Bee Gees anthology coming soon or any 30th-anniversary specials next year, "If I Can't Have You" of course is the Gibbs-written "Saturday Night Fever" song turned into a UK (#4) and US (#1) hit in 1978 by Yvonne Elliman. It never was a hit for the brothers themselves. Only Kim Wilde took a remake to #51 in 1993 back when airplay was allowed into the compilation of the lower half. Now it becomes the brothers' 45th chart entry at #71 as it is remixed by the Disco Boys, 40 years after their debut in 1967, and it's the first song to make the top 100 since "This Is Where I Came In" peaked at #25 in the spring.

   "Bee Gee Greatest"
This re-issue enters the Catalog Charts in the USA. "Bee Gees Greatest" is number 1 in the Catalog Chart and is the 35th best selling album in the US. The set scanned 20,000 copies in the USA this week. In Canada it enters the charts at 29. The older version of the set had peaked at 3 in the Catalog Chart back in 1997.

This is a reissue in spite of the new songs so it's correct what Billboard has done here. Greatest joins legendary albums like "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "Grease" which have topped the top 200 and the Catalog Chart. The Bee Gees had reached number 1 in this chart before with: 'One Night Only' which has been a very good seller in the USA in spite of reaching only 72 when released in '98.

   "One Night Only DVD" The DVD climbs from number 8 to 4 in Brazil . This is amazing bearing in mind that the DVD was number 1 back in 2003 .The set is also at number 10 in Australia.

   Australia by the way is the 7th and Brazil the 12th largest market in the world. In Brazil the Brothers Gibb have a huge following, even more than the Stones and Abba by a big margin, at least in record and DVD sales.

   "Number Ones" After American Idol the album entered at number 13 in the Catalog Chart. The following week it dropped to 44.The set spent 60 weeks on Billboards top 200 chart and has spent 7 weeks in the Catalog Chart shifting 1.035.000 copies in the US alone .
